What New Parents Should Know About Their Baby’s Skin Care

If you haven’t ever cared for a newborn before, your baby’s skin care can be intimidating. When you are a new parent, taking good care of your baby’s skin (as well as keeping your baby healthy and alive) quickly becomes one of your top priorities and it can be easy to get overwhelmed in trying to get everything right.

Would it help you to learn that common sense is at the heart of baby skin care? Clean and clear baby skin does not depend on expensive or complicated skin care routines. The fact is that you don’t need to buy a large number of products to keep your baby’s skin clean and clear. Here are some helpful hints for new parents to use as they develop their baby’s skin care routine.

Daily baths are not required for newborns and very young infants. For the most part newborns and very young infants stay pretty clean. They don’t get dirty because, for the most part, they are immobile and depend on Mom and Dad to get around. This means that parents can keep an eye out for things that will get the baby dirty or that could harm the baby’s skin. When your baby is still a newborn, you only need to bathe your baby a couple of times a week as long as you keep his or her face clean. Once your son our daughter is mobile you will want to start bathing him (or her) more often.

Your baby’s umbilical stump is fragile–be careful around it. Rubbing it, pulling on it and playing with it are bad ideas. Make sure that you clean it with rubbing alcohol two or three times a day. Other than that, leave it alone. Your level of care should be so high that you don’t even give the baby a real bath until after the stump has fallen off. Folding down the top edge of your baby’s diaper is the best way to keep the diaper from accidentally irritating the umbilical cord stump. The stump is very sensitive so you want to make sure that it does not get irritated. The stump will leave behind a spot on your baby–talk to your pediatrician about how to best care for that spot.
