6 Methods for Handling Hyperactivity In Kids

It’s a neverending job coping with hyperactivity in kids. Not only because , it can be difficult to distinguish hyperactivity in kids  from normal active conduct.  Is the child who is tearing  around the house and never stopping a hyperactive child or just a normal child?  

To distinguish hyperactivity in children one must understand that it is and differentiate normal active behavior and what is hyperactivity .  Start by observing the child, are the movements of the child purposeful or random?  Hyperactive children can be more restless , fidget a great deal , run into things, over objects and/or people, and climb up anything they can.  The hyperactive child never seems to stop and appears they are moving just to move and expend energy .

Being good parents of a hyperactive child  can be utterly exhausting !  You’ll find you are chasing your child in order to save your home or your child from injury.  As a parent of a overactive child , you want to help your hyperactive child direct their vitality in constructive ways and at appropriate times.  It certainly can be a challenge dealing with hyperactivity in kids, but there are some tips that can help you and your child on this journey.  Below are some tips that can help you as you work on raising your hyperactive child.

Hyperactivity in Kids Tip #1:  Teach Relaxation Techniques

While hyperactive kids love to be constantly doing things , it is important that they learn how to have down time .  Relaxation is good for both the mind and the body and can help develop their self-control.  Work with your child on sitting still , teaching them to breathe deeply, close their eyes, and think about a peaceful setting.  Sometimes it can help to massage their shoulders and hands to encourage relaxation, as well as play peaceful music.

Tip #2:  Structure

Hyperactive kids require lots of structure in their environment. Make a schedule and stick to it and provide boundaries for your child.

Tip #3: Get rid of the phrase, “Time Out”

While the concept is the same, but the name has been changed .  Replace with  words such as “quiet time” or “reflective time” that encourages stillness and thinking .

Tip #4:  Body Awareness

Teaching your child to be aware of their own body and their space will help them to not intrude into personal space .  

Tip #5:  Listening

Hyperactivity in kids can also show up verbally !  If your child talks non-stop, teach them the importance of listening to other people and taking turns in the dialogue .

Tip #6:  Supervision

Hyperactive kids require a great deal of parental supervision and connectedness.  When dealing with hyperactivity in kids, a large portion of the day is exhausted redirecting your child and telling them to “stop”.  Make sure to set aside some time every day for you and your child to spend some quality time together enjoying each others’ company.  This is also a great time to demonstrate stillness and model positive behavior while enjoying your child’s company and helping them with achieving self discipline.
